Innovating teaching and learning

A nexus for scholars, artists, designers, practitioners, and community members who share a common interest in learning and teaching through the arts.

The Center for Pedagogy in Arts and Design (C-PAD) is a cross-disciplinary center whose goal is to advance arts and design pedagogies, research, and professional development applicable to learning and teaching in all disciplines.

C-PAD is a partnership between the College of Arts and Architecture and Teaching and Learning with Technology at Penn State (TLT). We support our mission through a program for faculty Innovators in Residence, Discovery Grants for research, and an annual Teaching Award to reward excellence in pedagogy.

The Community Arena re-envisions the C-PAD Academy as an ongoing series of smaller engagements designed to facilitate events for community growth, professional development opportunities for A&A educators and graduate students. The program will feature monthly teaching and learning topics, a resource sharing initiative, drop-in sessions for the online graduate teaching practicum, and surveying of all instructors across the College to access their needs, interests, and engagement preferences. Discussion with local unit leaders will also help inform our understanding of additional support we can provide. We look forward to growing and evolving with our A&A Community.

Behind the Scenes: The CPAD Research Engine

Research is a way to think about something, and CPAD thinks about storytelling. We watch storytelling happen in our classrooms and communities, and we think about how that “happening”…happens. A story is a construction project that works to make ideas visible, and whether you are thinking about science, religion, art, or computer graphics, storytelling is a way to put the puzzle of your idea together so you can see it clearly. Our Research Engine watches storytelling happen in an extraordinary space called The CPAD Teaching Lab. The story of how arts-based technology works to create puzzles and possibilities is the story of The Lab, and the story of The Lab is being constructed 24/7. What if…..

The CPAD Teaching Lab Arena pushes the boundaries of technological innovation within a classroom. This one-of-a-kind environment features unique arts-based technologies, and the Lab offers instructors and students unlimited possibilities for immersive teaching and learning experiences. Rigorous IRB-approved research seeks to understand how students and faculty work within this artistically charged space, and the CPAD Research Engine seeks to document how arts-based learning forwards community building and Peace. CPAD offers Open House events and workshops to showcase the space to Penn State communities, and the CPAD Lab is open to any instructor in any discipline who wishes to explore and expand personal and collective opportunities for teaching and learning. Amidst all the technology, CPAD askes one question of an instructor and a learner:
What if……..
